Apollo vs Clay compared on prospecting, enrichment, research and pricing, with a fair pilot scorecard and a realistic seat-cost example.
Apollo and Clay overlap in prospecting workflows, but they are not interchangeable purchases. Apollo combines a searchable B2B database with engagement tools. Clay provides a workspace for enrichment, research and workflow automation across sources, and also lists a native email sequencer.
Choose by the workflow you need to operate. A rep who wants to build a list and start working it has a different requirement from an operator assembling evidence from several systems. This comparison uses published capabilities and pricing, not an independent data-quality benchmark.
The practical comparison
Decision | Apollo | Clay |
|---|---|---|
Starting point | Search for prospects and work a sales list | Build a table and configure research or enrichment |
Pricing structure | Plan, seats and credits | Plan, actions and data credits |
Research workflow | Evaluate the included features for your use case | Configure steps, providers and conditions |
Engagement | Sequences and sales engagement capabilities | Native sequencer and activation integrations |
Main evaluation task | Test coverage and the rep workflow | Test output, usage and maintenance work |
See the current Apollo pricing and Clay pricing tables for the exact features and limits of each configuration.
The seat-price calculation is only a starting point
Apollo Basic lists $49 per user per month billed annually. Clay Launch starts at $167 per month with unlimited seats. At those headline figures, four Apollo Basic seats cost $196 per month, while three cost $147. That arithmetic is correct. It does not establish that Clay is cheaper for every team with four people.
Users | Apollo Basic monthly equivalent | Clay Launch starting price |
|---|---|---|
1 | $49 | $167 |
3 | $147 | $167 |
4 | $196 | $167 |
10 | $490 | $167 |
The table compares an annual per-seat price with a starting workspace price and different allowances. Clay Launch lists 15,000 monthly actions and 3,000 data credits. Apollo’s credits and capabilities depend on its plan. A team can exceed a usage budget or require an integration before the seat calculation becomes relevant. Annual commitments also affect cash flow and flexibility.
Add data top-ups, external services, any retained tools and operator time to both sides. Our Clay pricing guide shows how to calculate cost per accepted record rather than a misleading nominal credit price.
Test data quality on your target market
There is no reliable universal conclusion that one database is sufficiently accurate for every US list or that a waterfall always wins in Europe. Different providers can return overlapping or stale information. More sources offer additional routes to an answer; they do not remove the need to check the answer.
Build a test set of named companies and roles that resembles the next campaign. Separate missing contacts from incorrect contacts. A missing email is inconvenient; an incorrect role paired with a confident personalised claim can undermine the entire message.
Use the same acceptance criteria for both products: correct company, current role, required contact channel, usable evidence and no suppression conflict. Review a sample manually. Do not treat an email verification result as proof of interest or permission to contact someone.
Compare the work after enrichment
Apollo is a candidate when an integrated rep workflow is the priority. Have a rep demonstrate search, save, sequence, reply handling and CRM update using your actual process. Check which capabilities require a different tier or additional credits.
Clay is a candidate when the workflow needs custom research questions, conditional enrichment or data from several systems. Have the intended operator demonstrate a successful row, a missing result and a failed integration. Then ask another team member to understand and maintain the table from its documentation.
Sending capability is no longer a simple dividing line. Instead, check whether the selected product supports your required channels, scheduling, reply handling, exclusions and CRM behaviour. If you need a deeper engagement platform comparison, read Outreach vs Salesloft.
A pilot scorecard
Measure | Record it this way | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Usable contact yield | Accepted contacts divided by attempted contacts | Measures output against your own criteria |
Evidence quality | Review source and date for research claims | Prevents unsupported personalisation |
Operator effort | Minutes to configure, review and recover | Captures work outside the subscription |
Total cost | Relevant invoices plus time | Makes pricing comparable |
Handoff quality | Correct records and tasks in the CRM | Tests the complete workflow |
Run enough varied records to expose the edge cases that matter to your market. A small pilot provides directional evidence, not a universal accuracy statistic. Keep the test conditions and scoring visible so the team can understand the decision.
Can you use Apollo and Clay together?
Yes. A workflow can use Apollo data alongside Clay orchestration where the relevant integration and subscription rights support it. In that arrangement, you are buying complementary capabilities. Count both subscriptions and establish which system owns updates, exclusions and duplicates.
If the real problem is that nobody has time to research prospects, write relevant messages and manage replies, buying both tools can increase the work waiting to be done. Discuss an AI-powered outbound workflow with Rhycon, or compare the broader category in best AI SDR tools.
Which should you shortlist?
Shortlist Apollo for an integrated prospecting and engagement workflow. Shortlist Clay for configurable research and enrichment. Test both when your requirements overlap. Make the final decision from accepted output, operating effort and the complete bill, rather than a fixed seat-count rule.
