How to check whether your sending domain is on a blacklist, why it happens, and the step by step process to get delisted and stay off.
To check if your domain is blacklisted, search it on the Spamhaus lookup and a multi-list checker such as MXToolbox. If it is listed, fix the cause first (compromised account, bad list, spam content), then submit a delisting request to the specific list. Requesting removal before you fix the cause usually fails, or the listing comes back.
Authentication problems are a common cause of poor placement that gets mistaken for blacklisting. Run your domain through the free Rhycon email deliverability checker first to rule that out.
Domain blacklist vs IP blacklist
These are two different problems, and people often mix them up.
IP blacklist. The server's IP address is listed for sending spam. It matters most if you send through a dedicated or shared IP.
Domain blacklist. Your domain name, or a link domain in your emails, is listed. Spamhaus DBL and SURBL are the best known. These lists target domains that appear in message bodies and sender addresses, so they follow you whichever server you use.
The main lists to know
Spamhaus. The most influential. Its DBL lists domains, and its other lists cover IPs. A Spamhaus listing can cause blocks across many providers.
SURBL. Lists domains found in spam message bodies. Our experience is that it is a surprisingly common cause of cold email domains landing in spam.
Barracuda. Mostly IP-based, and widely used by corporate filters.
SpamCop. Reports-driven, based on user complaints. Listings tend to expire on their own.
How to check
Look up your sending domain and any tracking or link domains on the Spamhaus lookup page.
Run the domain through SURBL's lookup.
Use a multi-list tool such as MXToolbox Blacklist Check for the IP and domain.
Check Google Postmaster Tools if you have enough volume. A domain reputation of Low or Bad is a warning even without a listing.
Why domains get listed
High complaint rates. Recipients hitting "report spam".
Bad lists. Purchased or old lists with spam traps and invalid addresses.
Compromised accounts. Someone else sending from your mailbox.
Link and tracking domains. A shared tracking domain used by other senders can get you listed by association. Using a custom tracking domain avoids this.
Sudden volume spikes. Sending hundreds of emails from a new domain on day one.
Linking to listed domains. Even a link to a blacklisted site can drag you in.
How to get delisted
Stop sending from the listed domain until you understand why.
Fix the cause. Secure accounts, clean the list, remove risky links, set up a custom tracking domain.
Confirm authentication. SPF, DKIM and DMARC should all pass.
Submit a removal request on the list's own site. Be specific about what happened and what you changed. Keep it factual and short.
Wait. Some lists respond in hours, others take days. Repeated requests do not speed it up.
Restart slowly. Resume at a fraction of your previous volume.
Know when to retire a domain
If a domain is repeatedly listed, or the reputation does not recover after a few weeks, replace it. Cold sending domains are meant to be replaceable, which is why outbound should be spread across several of them. If you would rather not run this yourself, see Rhycon's managed infrastructure, which uses Rhycon-owned domains and mailboxes for your outreach.
How to avoid it in the first place
Verify every address before you send.
Keep volume low and steady. See our warm-up schedule.
Use a custom tracking domain and do not link to unknown sites.
Keep copy relevant and make opting out easy.
Blacklist FAQs
How do I know if my domain is blacklisted?
Look it up on Spamhaus, SURBL and a multi-list checker. Sudden drops in replies or a spike in bounces are also signs.
How long does delisting take?
From a few hours to a few days, depending on the list. Some listings expire automatically.
Is being blacklisted the same as going to spam?
No. Spam placement can come from authentication, content or reputation problems with no blacklist involved. Check your setup first.
Can I keep using a blacklisted domain?
Only after you fix the cause and get delisted. If it keeps happening, switch to a fresh domain.
